When I began my role in operations management, I knew we needed a better way to manage the different aspects of our business apart from pulling our hair out using Google Sheets as a means to wrangle the chaos. At that time, I set out to find an ERP or MRP system that could help me accomplish the goals I wanted and contained the features I needed, but plot twist: it didn't exist, or it was WAY too expensive for a small business to justify. So what did I do? I researched my butt off, learned how to code, and built my own system, and let me tell you something, this software is no measly joke. Mission Control, as I call it, is an extremely powerful relational database with features such as order management, inventory management, forecasting, KPI reports, defect reports, payroll management, employee management, manufacturing resource planning, customer relationship management, and a whole lot more. Not only does it work well, it looks pretty good too. I have build robust API integrations into my software so my orders are seamlessly imported into my system from all the platforms I sell on such as our own 4 BigCommerce platforms, Etsy, Ebay, Wayfair, Amazon, Walmart, Shopify, WooCommerce, and more. Just think, if you had someone a part of your business who knew how to manage a company, but also knew how to build powerful software, what levels of efficiency could be achieved in your line of work?
Having the ability to manage our orders exactly how we want to has given us a significant advantage in making sure every product is manufactured up to our standards.
All employee time tracking is done internally within the system, and it gives us real time application to what our cost of goods comes to be when applying labor resources.
Customizable KPI reports give us the chance to gauge how we are doing and what needs to be improved within the company. With so many points of data at our fingertips, anytime we need to know something, it's only a few clicks away.
Consumables inventory is a very important thing to manage, so my inventory system gives us realtime heads up alerts when items are low. The system also tracks how long it takes goods to arrive, and helps to determine when certain inventories need to be replenished. The system also tracks the cost of goods across time, and upon ordering, the internal cost to produce products with ordered items in the BOM are updated in real time.
Having a pulse on who the best performers are in a business is extremely beneficial to the success of the company. Being able to track employee progress in all situations has not only been good for the culture of the company, but in making sure we have the right people in the right places.
Using data from previous years and making continuous comparisons to YTD data, we are able to make confident assumptions about what the future hold, what labor is needed, what inventory to purchase, and when to buy said inventory.
